Sugar Skull Halloween Makeup Video Tutorial

Sugar skulls are used during the celebration of the Day of the Dead in Mexico. These skulls are usually used as a type of decoration during this holiday but is a great face paint design for Halloween.




Supplies:  We recommend Graftobian ProPaint for this design.

You may also get all the face paints used in this tutorial in one kit. Choose from either the Graftobian Makeup Kit or Diamond FX Makeup Kit.

Tips: Always start with a clean face. Make sure that all paints, tools and the work area are all clean. Prepare everything you need before you start.

Let’s paint! 

Step 1Create a base. Using a sponge, cover the whole face with White Swan.

Step 2. Cover the eyes. Cover the eye area with Raven Black using a sponge.

Step 3. Outline the black eyes. Outline the black paint around the eye area using a #6 round brush loaded with Eggplant.

Step 4. Draw the teeth. Using a #1 round brush and Raven Black, paint the skull’s teeth making the teeth skinnier as you go by the sides.

Step 5. Draw the jawline. Using #2 round brush and Raven Black, draw the jawline and hole.

Step 6. Fill the jawline. With Yellow and 1/2 inch filbert brush, fill spaces on the jawline.

Step 7.  Blend the jawline colors. With the same brush Blend the yellow paint with Crimson Red.

Step 8. Outline the teeth. Outline the teeth with Buttercup Yellow and #2 round brush.

Step 9. Draw additional details. With Wild Violet and the same brush, draw additional details around the jaw and mouth area.

Step 10. Draw yellow petals. With a #6 round brush and Electric Yellow, draw petals on the forehead, around the eyes and chin.

Step 11. Outline the petals. With Atomic Orange and #6 round brush, outline the petals.

Step 12. Blend the paints. Blend the orange and yellow paints, with a wide chisel brush.

Step 13Paint the nose. Using a #6 round brush, paint the nose with Raven black.

Step 14. Paint green on the nose. Paint Radioactive Green on top of the black paint to add some depth on the nose. Use a chisel brush.

Step 15. Outline all the details. Outline all the details on the design using a #1 round brush loaded with black.

Step 16. Stencil designs. Using a sponge loaded with Aztec Turquoise and a Badass Stencil, add additional details on top of the white base.

Step 17. Draw decorative lines. Using black and #1 round brush, add creative lines, swirls and curls all over the design.

Step 18. Finish with glitter. Add glitter on the design.
